Oliver's Story
Since I first heard about the Nicaragua service trip I knew that it was what I wanted to do for Christmas Break. Working with Chicago's homeless and low-income population during the summer for a program called Design for America made me realize that efforts to combat issues like poverty and a lack of medical services can be successful with comprehensive programming and a strong volunteer base. The Fabretto Children's Foundation helps the people of Nicaragua through programs promoting education, nutrition and health, and community development. Although I am one person, I feel I can make a positive impact on the lives of the people of Cusmapa, be it through helping to provide clean water, building an extension for a schoolhouse or church, or raising funds so that Fabretto can continue its good work.
My name is Oliver Ortega and I am a sophomore majoring in Journalism and International Studies. I hope to work as a foreign correspondent someday, helping the underserved and marginalized people of the Cusmapas around the world. I feel that this service opportunity is also a chance to immerse myself in another culture in preparation for my possible career and follow Jesus' example by showing compassion and love for my fellow man. I don't have any overly lofty expectations of our trip; I know that our trip will not be the end-all, be-all, but I'm ready to pull my weight and work hard to help the inhabitants of Cusmapa once I get down there.
